Cameron Wilcher Named Leake County Jr. Miss

Cameron Wilcher, center, a student at Leake Academy, was named Leake County’s Junior Miss during the forty-ninth edition of the pageant Saturday night at Carthage Elementary School. Samantha Moore, left, of Carthage High School was first alternate and Callie Craig, right, also of CHS, was named second alternate.


Cameron Wilcher was named the 2009 Leake County Junior Miss on Saturday, claiming the title from a field of nine contestants at Carthage Elementary School. Wilcher, a student at Leake Academy, is the daughter of Kent and Lisha Wilcher. At Leake Academy, she is a member of the Rebelette basketball team, the cheerleading squad, the tennis team, drama club, Beta Club, SADD and the Christian Club. She is also a member of Carthage United Methodist Church where she is active in the youth group.

The winner and finalists shared cash scholarship money totaling $3,500, college scholarships and other awards. In winning the title, Wilcher was presented a cash scholarship of $1,500. Leake’s 2008 Junior Miss Caitlin Grimes presented the winner’s medallion to Wilcher. The new Junior Miss also won her choice of scholarships from seven colleges and universities; a $200 savings bond from the Heritage Banking Group; a $200 savings bond from First Financial Bank; a $100 savings from Citizens Bank; a $200 savings bond from Citizens National Bank; a $50 savings bond from the Bank of Walnut Grove and a Merle Norman gift certificate. The Eagles Nest donated flowers for the winners and alternates.

Wilcher was also the winner in the scholastic portion of the pageant’s competition, receiving a $125 scholarship for that distinction.

 Scholarships offers to the winner include $2,800 from East Central Community College; $3,176 from Jones Junior College; $1,000 from Mississippi State University; $2,000 from William Carey College; $3,000 from Cambellsville University of Kentucky; Troy State University scholarship based on GPA and ACT score, and $3,500 from the University of West Alabama.  

 Marianna Wilcox Harkins was named the 2009 Leake County Junior Miss Volunteer of the Year. Leake County’s Junior Miss in 1990, she has been involved with and emceed the local program for over 10 years. Wilcox Harkins emceed Saturday’s pageant along with her father, Sonny Wilcox.
